Jones' Potato Chips

Frederick W. Jones, founder of Jones Potato Chip Company, began his career as a distributor. He sold a variety of products such as margarine, soup mixes, cookies, pickles, nuts, pretzels, and potato chips. In the early 1940's, Frederick was unable to get potato chips from his usual source. He received the blessing, and some much needed expertise from his supplier, to begin his own production. The Jones Potato Chip Company came to life.

Ballreich's Potato Chips

Ballreich History It was 1920 in Tiffin, Ohio when Fred Ballreich and his wife, Ethel opened their homemade potato chip operation in a dirt floor garage, using a copper kettle heated with wood scraps. It was an all day process that produced only 14 pounds of potato chips. Ballreich’s chose to make their potato chips “marcelled”, which means “wavy chip,” taken from the popular ladies wavy hairstyle of the 1920s.

The quality of the Ballreich’s potato chips created a huge demand that couldn’t be met by a husband and wife operation so Fred contacted his brother, Carl Ballreich, who was currently working as a supervisor at the Chevrolet Motor Plant in Flint, Michigan. Carl came back to his hometown to form the joint venture of Ballreich Brother’s Potato Chips. With the combination of Fred’s sales and baking skills along with Carl’s strong work ethic and management skills, the company was well on its way to success!

Mrs. Fisher's Potato Chips

Mrs. Fisher’s Potato Chips was founded in Rockford, IL in 1932 by Mrs. Ethel Fisher. Since that time, the company has formed a time honored tradition to manufacture homestyle, thick-sliced potato chips. It was actually Mr. Fisher that came up with the idea of producing potato chips for a living. The couple started out cooking the chips in their basement on a two burner wash stove in order to make extra income during the Depression. Now, Mrs. Fisher’s is one of the oldest "chippers" in the Midwest. "We are dedicated to serving our community and providing a quality product to all of our customers," says Roma and Mark Hailman, the new owners of Mrs. Fisher’s.
