Salmon is a natural resourse that needs carefull management. There is one Atlantic salmon and five North Pacific native salmon species in the genus Oncorhynchus. These species are commonly called Atlantic Salmon, Chinook, Coho, Pink, Chum and Sockeye. They are all considered to be anadromous, meaning that they are born in fresh water, migrate to the ocean, then return to fresh water to reproduce.

Mountain Lake Fisheries

Mountain Lake Fisheries was formed in August of 1991 to commercially develop one of northwest Montana’s most abundant natural resources, Lake Superior whitefish from Flathead Lake. Located near Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake is the largest natural fresh water lake west of the Mississippi River.

In an effort to provide better forage for Kokanee Salmon within northwest Montana lakes, in 1989 the state planted mysis shrimp. These shrimp eventually filtered into Flathead Lake through an interconnecting river system and their numbers mushroomed dramatically. With this abundant new food source, whitefish numbers exploded over the next few years with some fish reaching up to 9 pounds. When their numbers began to endanger other trout species within the lake, the state decided to allow commercial single line whitefishing. With a grant from the Montana Dept. of Agriculture, in 1990 a feasibility study was done to determine if a local market existed for whitefish fillets and if a commercial enterprise could harvest sufficient whitefish to meet the demand by rod and reel fishing alone.

Zabar's

Zabar's

For over 70 years, Zabar's has been located on Broadway at 80th Street. But, not always as it exists today. In 1934 Louis and Lillian Zabar started Zabar's by renting an Appetizing Counter in a Daitch Market. Louis had a philosophy. He would sell only the highest quality smoked fish at a fair price. He wanted his customers to trust him and he wanted them to become "regulars".

Zabar's is open 365 days a year and there is always a Zabar in the store. Today the store is over 20,000 square feet (almost a city block long). We have over 250 employees. We sell over 8,000 lbs of coffee a week and over 35,000 customers a week visit our store.
